Houston native, Johari Mills is a passionate educator who cares greatly about the education and development of our youth. She has always been a tireless worker, finishing high school with both a diploma and a certificate in the field of Cosmetology. She began her career after receiving her Bachelors Degree from Texas Southern University and her Masters in Educational Management from Prairie View A&M. She taught kindergarten for three years before deciding to open her own beauty salon, FlowerChild's Studio Salon of Houston which is now GirlBlew Studio.
However, it was the training she had received as a child, first from the Cookie Jo School of Classical Ballet, and then her training of several years under the tutelage of the world renowned South African dancer and choreographer, Lindi Yini, that inspired her in the art of dance - especially African dance. She danced professionally in the Kuumba Kids of Houston's Kuumba House, the Wonlande West African Dance and Drum Company under the instruction of Djembefola and choreographer Mohamed Diaby, and later she danced in the Irunmole Dance Company of Houston. Her passion for African dance is non-ceasing!
Presently, Johari continues to travel nationally to take classes from master dance instructors in the different forms of African dance. It is apparent that her training in the field of education was unavoidable, for today Johari has turned two of her passions - dance and education - into the Girl Blew School of African Dance, instructing the youth of Houston, Texas in the arts and culture of African dance and drum.
